Use of cassette-based imaging systems for mammography-guided interventions
Statement by the German Commission on Radiological Protection
Adopted at the 239th meeting of the SSK on 3/4 December 2009
Abstract
In mammography-guided interventions a distinction is made between investigating a suspected tumour using vacuum needle biopsy and the preoperative marking of a breast carcinoma.
Marking is generally performed under x-ray and ultrasound guidance, with the site of the marking localised under x-ray mammography guidance. Screen-film, CR and digital systems are all suitable for this.
Stereotactic vacuum biopsies should only be conducted using digital systems, because of the long duration of the examination when using conventional systems. The lengthy procedure entails the risk of deviations due to patient movement and a consequent need for further examinations. Digital systems also hold the possibility of reducing the dose.
