Abstract

When treating patients exposed to radiation as a result of radiological accidents, bridging therapy is necessary and expedient to bring about a positive change in the course of radiation-induced multiple organ failure, thereby winning the time needed to offer multi-stage treatment. The successful implementation of innovative research approaches, e.g. including non embryonal stem cells, would make a major contribution towards extending the limited treatment options currently available for those accidentally exposed to radiation.

From an expert radiobiological and radiation medicine standpoint, the Commission on Radiological Protection recommends on principle the promotion of new treatment approaches designed to produce an innovative medical strategy specifically designed for the dynamic multi-stage treatment of patients suffering from acute radiation syndrome, while catering for a potential mass casualty situation.Since this issue is not confined to Germany, international cooperation must be sought.
