Abstract
What (kind of) information is required to make decisions on actions for the protection of the population against incidents involving releases of radionuclides? The SSK recommendation stated above, hereafter known as Basic Radiological Principles, provides the basics for such incidents and is aimed at the authorities that deal with emergency response action planning.
The Basic Radiological Principles cover the following topics:
- Phases of a nuclear accident and exposure pathways,
- Health effects of radiation exposure,
- Actions to protect the public,
- Decision-making process in the event of an incident,
- Other radiological emergency situations following a major release of radioactive substances,
- Radiological protection for emergency services,
- Radiation protection for specific professional groups.
The SSK has again revised the Basic Radiological Principles, which were last revised in 2009. This latest revision incorporates the new basic radiation protection recommendations published in 2007 by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).
