Abstract
In an advisory mandate dated 11 November 2020 the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety asked the SSK to review and, if necessary, to revise the recommendation of the SSK formulated in 2006 on the subject “Long-term maintaining expertise in the field of radiation research and application in Germany”. In this regard, the SSK should answer the question, which institutions or organisations are able to conduct basic research in radiation protection in Germany in the future and which measures can be taken to promote radiation research.
As a first step, this statement identifies the most important areas of expertise and actors for ensuring long-term expertise in radiation research. On the basis of this statement, the SSK will subsequently develop recommendations regarding measures that can be taken to support research in the field of ionising and non-ionising radiation in Germany and to secure expertise in the long term.
